Poetry is our Second Language - this September!

Photo by Alex Felipe Heads up everyone! Poetry is our Second Language (PSL) is back this month in its second year. Leonard Cervantes in community partnership with Kapisanan presents a four-week poetry unit that will explore poetry as an essential part of Filipino fabric since the beginning of time until today.

The program will first introduce traditional forms of Filipino poetry, including the Balagtasan and Filipino epic poetry. With this grounding, the program will then move on to explore effective poetry writing and spoken word performance techniques. Finally, participants will be introduced to the Spoken Word/Poetry Scene in Toronto, as the workshop culminates with a final slam performance--more details in the upcoming weeks!

Week one will feature some of PSL's freshest alumni (Batch 2) who took part in the summer 2009 workshop series. Through their background with PSL, these individuals will strive to develop incoming spoken word/slam poet rookies into a greater appreciation of this art, as well as honing writing and performance skills.

"As of today, this alumni has continued to visit schools, conducting their own poetry workshops as well as continuing to write, collaborate, perform and compete in local poetry events. They have blossomed into true poetry artists in their own right and are representative of the forward evolution of our poetic heritage." - Leonard Cervantes

Anyone is welcome to attend--you'll learn something about both the Philippines and poetry, maybe even find talent you never thought you had. All you need are your paper and pen... Sounds easy, right?
