Note: All videos require Adobe Flash to play. Click here to download.
Shoolie will be the guest speaker at this week’s PSL!

Last week, we talked about structure. This coming week, it’s all about performance and team dynamics. The next session of PSL will focus on TEAM WRITING: how to best bring out your team’s strengths, as well as your own!

PSL grad Henrick “Shoolie” Sales will be spearheading this week’s session to talk about tips on writing as part of a team, and his path to Slam poetry groups around the GTA.

Life after PSL was very interesting! After PSL I got to put what I learn in action and it made me both a better writer and performer.” -- Henrick “Shoolie” Sales

Poetry is Our Second Language
Poetry is Our Second Language, August 4, 2011

Poetry is our Second Language (PSL)
Curriculum developed, and program facilitated by Len Cervantes

Poetry is our Second Language (PSL) is a four-week poetry unit that will reveal that Poetry has been a part of who we are as Filipinos since the beginning of time until today, and is very much a part of our Filipino fabric. The workshop series will first introduce the traditional forms of Filipino poetry, including the Balagtasan and Filipino epic poetry. Upon having this background, the program will then move on to explore effective poetry writing and spoken word performance techniques. Finally, participants will be introduced to the Spoken Word/Poetry Scene in Toronto, as the workshop culminates with a final Slam performance.

This program is funded by the Arts Education Program of Ontario Arts Council.

Eating with Lola

Eating with Lola, September 15, 2011

Written and performed by Catherine Hernandez
Presented by the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture
Produced by Sulong Theatre
Directed by Ann Powell (Puppetmongers Theatre)

Sulong Theatre Collective joins forces with the legendary Puppetmongers to bring you the story of Lola, so old and sick she has to be spoon fed by her granddaughter Grace. It wasn’t always like this. Over the course of her final meal on earth, Lola explains how it was always her job to find food – even if that meant stealing it.

Part confession, part revelation, Lola’s epic tale unravels the entire modern history of Manila from the time of the Thomasites to the second wave of Filipino migration to the United States – one spoonful at a time.

A one woman (and one puppet) tour-de-force. First excerpt was presented at the 2009 Kultura Festival. First full length version developed by fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company.

Help keep a good thing going! Join KAPISANAN for this Fundraiser Performance of Eating With Lola by Catherine Hernandez.

Filipino Language Program, Starts September 20, 2011

KAPISANAN Presents: Conversational Filipino Language Program

Kapisanan Philippine Centre is offering Tagalog classes that use the direct method of learning a language. The students focus on CONVERSATIONAL skills in Tagalog. Classroom techniques include role-plays, games, songs, pair work, and writing exercises.

At the end of the 10-week program, students should be able to use Filipino in greetings and situations such as telling ti…me as well as asking and giving directions. Our aim is to equip students who complete each level with Filipino language that describes people, objects, places, narrates an event or simple story; expresses feelings, as well as agreement or disagreement.

Curriculum is developed and will be taught by Christine Balmes.

Every Tuesday @ 6:30pm starting September 20th, 2011 – November 22nd, 2011

Written by Brian Ejar, Marketing Intern

Roses are red, violets are blue – stop. For real? That’s the first thing most people think of when they hear the word “poem”. Let’s get real here, that’s child’s play. It’s practically like beginning all your conversations with “Hey! How are you?” or beginning  your stories with Once upon a time — weak. Do you get what I’m getting at?

It may be the “safe zones” of general literature but you know that this generation is way too developed to be playing with words that were considered original during a time when there were still dinosaurs! Times have changed, and so should your poetry!
