The second installment Balikbayan Renaissance was a huge hit!
It was a joy to see both old and new faces at Kapisanan, all ready and eager to use their creative energies to learn, play, interact, and create.
Kapwa Collective co-facilitated the workshop and opened with a discussion, sharing their knowledge about indigenous weaving practices in the Philippines, as well as presenting intricate tapestries from T'boli, Kalinga and Ifugao.
Shortly after, Cynthia spoke about her experience as a weaving artist; Cynthia incorporates every day materials into her process, bridging traditional and contemporary forms of weaving. Ensuring a safe space for the community to engage, Cynthia made the atmosphere feel like home.
Weaving is a way to connect with materials and with each other. Participants immersed themselves in a trifecta of cultural arts, healing arts, and weaving arts. Not only was this a hands-on, learning workshop, the weavers also stood back-to-back, sometimes crossing over each other, and were physically connected to their back-strap looms, offering a unique and intimate experience.
Apart from getting crafty, weavers were also able to get their shop on! The VINTA pop-up sales offereed modern Filipiniana and other textile goodies at amazing prices.
The Kapwa Collective pop-up was also abuzz with T'boli cultural items. Sales from Kapwa Collective that day went to benefit the Lake Sebu School of Living Traditions, K'nalaum Weaving Village and supporting artisans.
A special thank you goes out to Tim Manalo, Kapisanan's NAV Coordinator, for providing his weaving expertise and for creating a bridge between Kapisanan, Kapwa, and Cynthia! We also congratulate him as we look forward to his exhibition at the Weaving Hand, which opens on May 16th!
