This weekend, KAPISANAN becomes national! KAPISANAN, in community partnership with Aksyon Ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) Inc., presents the 4th Annual Liwayway Philippine Heritage High School Conference on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the University of Manitoba.
This year's youth conference will examine the theme Sino Ka?: Our Filipino-Canadian Identity through the Arts. Each year, up to 60 Filipino-Canadian high school students from across Winnipeg are invited to participate in youth-led dialog and discussion on issues faced by Filipino-Canadian youth. The one-day conference concludes with an evening celebration with community supporters, parents, and guests.
Kapisanan's community of Filipino-Canadian artists will facilitate workshops in three different break-out sessions that will cover topics such as Visual arts, Theatre & Improv, and PSL: Poetry is our Second Language.
Each session will incorporate both traditional and contemporary mediums in both Tagalog and English languages as tools of empowerment and personal expression. Each session will further underline the importance of cross-cultural acceptance and growth through the arts.
Also featured in this year's conference is Kapisanan's resident artrepreneur, Jodee Aguillon, who will give the Keynote Address on the importance of the Arts in solidifying unity and participation among Filipino-Canadian youth.
Wrapping up the evening is the Conference Gala, that will host community supporters, parents, and guests to a fun evening of student presentations, local performances, dinner and dance at Marion Hotel.
